4 μάχομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `do battle' (Il.).Other forms: ep. also μαχέομαι ( μαχειόμενος, μαχεούμενον metr. lengthening), aor. μαχέσ(σ)ασθαι (Il.), μαχήσασθαι (D. S., Paus.), μαχεσθῆναι (Plu., Paus.), fut. μαχήσομαι (ep. Ion.), μαχέσ(σ)ομαι (Ion. a. late), μαχέομαι (Β 366), μαχοῦμαι (Att.; μαχεῖται Υ 26), perf. μεμάχημαι (Att.),Compounds: Often with prefix, e.g. δια-, συν-, ἀπο- (on ἀμφι μάχομαι Bolling AmJPh 81, 77ff.). As s. member in synthetic paroxytona like μονο-μάχ-ος `battling alone' (A., E.), m. `gladiator' (Str.), with μονομαχ-έω, - ία etc., ναυ-μάχ-ος `battling on sea' (AP; but ναύ-μαχος from μάχη, s. below).Derivatives: μάχη `battle' (Il.; on the meaning etc. Porzig Satzinhalte 233, Trümpy Fachausdrücke 135 f.); as 2. member e.g. in ἄ-, πρό-, σύμ-, ναύ-, ἱππό-μαχος with derivv. like προμαχ-ίζω, συμμαχ-έω, ναυμαχ-έω, - ία. Derivv. 1. μαχη-τής m. `battler' (Hom., LXX), Dor. μαχατάς (P.; H. μαχάταρ ἀντίπαλος), Aeol. μαχαίτας (Alk. Z 27, 5; hyperaeol.?), also derived from μάχομαι; Trümpy 128. 2. μάχ-ιμος `warlike, soldier of an Egyptian tribe' (IA.; after ἄλκιμος, Arbenz 42) with μαχιμικός `after the μάχιμοι' (pap.). 3. Μαχάων m. PN (Aeol. ep.), Ion. - έων, with Dor. Μαχαν-ίδας (Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 207f., v. Wilamowitz Glaube 2, 228). -- From μάχομαι also μαχ-ήμων `martial' (Μ 247, AP) and μαχ-ητός `controllable' (μ 119; Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 14), ἀ-, περι-μάχ-ητος (Att.), μαχ-ητικός `prepared to fight' (Pl., Arist.; Chantraine Études 137); cf. μαχ-ήσομαι, με-μάχ-ημαι and Fraenkel 2, 79. -- Can be connected both with the noun as with the verb: -μάχᾱς, e.g. ἀπειρο-μάχᾱς `unexperienced in battle' (Pi.), λεοντο-μάχᾱς `fighting with a lion' (Theoc.); cf. Schwyzer 451.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin](X)Etymology: Beside the thematic root-present μάχομαι there is the isolated by-form μαχέομαι, prob. rather after μαχήσομαι (cf. below) than as denominative of μάχη (cf. Schwyzer 721 and Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 351). With μαχήσομαι: ἐμαχό-μην compare cases like ἀπ-εχθήσομαι: ἀπ-εχθόμην, μαθήσομαι: ἔμαθον, γενήσομαι: ἐγενόμην (Schwyzer 782). One is therefore prepared to see in ἐμαχόμην (to which μάχομαι was made) an original aorist, with which would agree, that the aorist in Hom. "auffallend selten gebraucht ist" (Trümpy Fachausdrücke 260 n. 333). When μαχεσθαι was reinterpreted as present a new aorist (after κοτέσσασθαι a. o.) μαχέσ-(σ)ασθαι would have arisen. After the type τελέσ(σ)αι: fut. τελῶ arose to μαχέσ(σ)ασθαι the new fut. μαχοῦμαι. -- In the field of fighting and battle old inherited expressions are hardly to be expected. The connection with a supposed Iran. PN * ha-mazan- prop. *"warrior" in Άμαζών (s. v.), with which also ἁμαζακάραν πολεμεῖν. Πέρσαι, ἁμαζανίδες αἱ μηλέαι H. is as original as uncertain. Within Greek it is formally possible, to connect μάχομαι with μάχαιρα and further with μῆχαρ, μηχανή (Fick BB 26, 230), which Chantr. rightly calls improbable; cf. esp. χειρο-μάχα f. (scil. ἑταιρεία) name of the workers party in Miletos after Plu. 2, 298 c; new attempt, to find a semantic basis for the connection in Trümpy 127 f. Diff. proposals in Bq and W.-Hofmann s. mactus, mactō. - The isolated root will rather be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,187-188Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάχομαι

5 μείγνυμι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `mix, bring together, connect', midd. `mix with each other, convene in battle' (Il.).Other forms: (- μιγ-, s. below; posthom.), - ύω (X., Arist.), μίσγω (Hom., IA. usw.), ὀνεμείχνυτο (Sapph.), aor. μεῖξαι, midd. (ep.) μίκτο (σ- or root aor., Schwyzer 751, Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 383), pass. μιγῆναι with fut. - ήσομαι, μ(ε)ιχθῆναι with - ήσομαι, fut. μείξω, - ομαι, perf. midd. μέμ(ε)ιγμαι; act. (hell.) μέμιχα.Compounds: Very often with prefix, e.g συν-, ἐπι-, κατα-, ἀνα-. As 1. member in governing compp. μ(ε)ιξ(ο)-, e.g. μιξ-έλληνες pl. `mixed-, halfhellenes' (Hellanik., hell.), μ(ε)ιξό-θροος `mixing the crying, with mixed crys' (A.); also μισγ-, esp in μισγ-άγκεια f. `place, where clefts meet' (Δ 453), from *μισγ-αγκής, s. Schwyzer 442, Sommer Nominalkomp. 174 f., Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 15. As 2. member in παμ-, ἀνα-, συμ-μιγής etc. (IA.); from there μιγής (Nic-.; Schwyzer 426 a. 513), ἀνα-, ἐπι-μίξ adv. `mixed' (Il.).Derivatives: Few derivv. 1. ( σύμ-) μεῖξις (- ι-) `mixing etc.' (IA.; Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 100 A. 2); 2. μεῖγμα (- ί-) `mixing' (Emp., Anaxag., Arist.; μεῖχμ[α] Alc.); 3. ἐπιμ(ε)ιξία, - ίη `mixing, intercourse' (IA.); from ἐπίμ(ε)ικ-τος. 4. μιγάς, - άδος m. f. `mixed, together' (Att.). 5. Several adverbs: ( σύμ-)μίγα, μιγά-δην, - δις, μίγ-δα, - δην (ep. poet.). 6. μιγάζομαι `mix, unite' (θ 271: μίγα, μιγάς; Schwyzer 734).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [714] *meiǵ\/ḱ- `mix'.Etymology: Whether μίγνυμι, which is fequent in mss., is an original zero grade, is very doubtful. Prob. μείγνυμι, built after μεῖξαι, μείξω was early (Schwyzer 697 w. n. 5). Also for other, in principle zero grade forms ( μίξις, ( σύμ) - μικτος, μέμιγμαι) the full grade is often found, μεῖξις etc. For the media in μίσγω, if from *μίγ-σκ-ω (diff. Wackernagel KZ 33, 39 = Kl. Schr. 1, 718: from *μι-μσγ-ω to Lat. mergō etc.), μιγῆναι, μίγα all other languages have tenuis, IE *m(e)iḱ-: Skt. miś-rá- = Lith. mìš-ras `mixed', Balt., e.g. Lith. miešiù, miẽšti `mix', Slav. (caus.), e.g. OCS měšǫ, měšiti `mix'. An iranian maēz- (IE *meiǵ-) in the sense of `mix', adopted by Smith Lang. 4, 178ff. because of Y. 44, 20, does not exist, s. Humbach Münch. Stud. 2, 7, where de form is connected from maēz- `urinate'. A sḱ-present is also well represented in the West: Lat. misceō, OIr. mesc(a)id `mixes, dips in, confuses', Germ., e.g. OHG miscan, NHG mischen (if not Lat. LW [loanword]). The νυ-present however is limited to Greek (so prob. innovation). The nasalinfixed GAv. minaš-, mostly rendered as `you shall mix' (pres. myāsa-), is by Humbach l.c. also derived from maēz- `urinate'. Indian has a reduplicated s-formation in mí-mikṣ-ati `mix' (prob. prop. desiderative), with perf. mimikṣé, caus. mekṣayati. On themselves stand the full grade forms Skt. pres. myakṣati = Av. myāsa-; on the root analysis s. Kuiper Nasalpräs. 123. Also the aorist μεῖξαι is isolated as well as μιγῆναι and the other forms with γ, which is prob. due to assimilation. -- Details in WP. 2, 244f., Pok.714, W. -Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. misceō, Fraenkel s. miẽšti, Vasmer s. mesítь.Page in Frisk: 2,192-193Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μείγνυμι

Mars (archaic and poet. Māvors, q. v.), Martis (collat. reduplic. form Marmar, in the Song of the Arval Brothers; v. the following, and Mamers), m. 8 ὅμῑλος
ὅμῑλοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `throng, band of warriors, crowd, turmoil of battle' (Il.);Other forms: (Aeol. ὄμιλλος [EM], prob. hyperdial., s. below).Compounds: As 2. member a.o. in ἐξ-όμιλος `standing out of the crowd, strange, uncommon' (S. in lyr.).Derivatives: Usu. denomin. ὁμιλέω (Aeol. pres. ὀμίλλει Alc.), also w. prefix like καθ-, προσ-, ἐξ-, `to be together, to associate with (friendly or adversely), to keep company, to discourse on' (Il.) with ὁμιλ-ία, - ίη f. `being together, intercourse, association, speech, sermon' (IA.; formally from ὅμιλος, s. Schwyzer 469), - ημα n. `association' (Pl., E.), - ητής ( συν- ὅμῑλος) m. `companion, adherant, student' (X., Luc.), f. - ήτρια (Philostr. VA), - ητικός `sociable, affable, conversable' (Isoc., Plu.). -- Adv. ὁμιλᾰδόν `in bands' (Il.; - ηδόν Hes. Sc.), `together with' (A. R., Opp.); supposition on the origin by Haas Μνήμης χάριν 1, 143. -- Detail on ὅμιλος etc. in Trümpy Fachausdrücke 145 ff.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: As ὄμιλλος, ὀμίλλει can very well be hyperAeolic (Hamm Gramm. $ 73b 3 a. 158f), we must start from ὅμ-ῑλο-ς (: ὁμός etc.) with the rare ῑλο-suffix ( στρόβιλος, πέδιλον a. o.; Chantraine Form. 249); from other languages we must esp. refer to the stemidentical and sense-cognate Skt. sam-īká- n. `battle', s. Hirt IF 31, 12 f. with a hypothesis on the origin of the ī (to - īno-, - īko-, - īto- etc. Meid IF 62, 260ff. a. 63, 14ff.). After H. here also Lat. mīles `soldier' from * sm-īlo- `turmoil of battle' (then only in ablaut deviating from ὅμιλος; diff. on mīles Kretschmer Glotta 31, 156 n. 6; s. also Szemerényi Arch. Linguist. 6, 41). A similar, but quite independent formation is ἅμιλλα (s. v.); (in my view Pre-Greek). -- Improbable on ὅμιλος Johansson IF 2, 34 n. (s. Bq, WP. 2, 491, W.-Hofmann s. mīles) and Adrados Emer. 17, 119ff. ( ὁμ(ο)- and ἴλη: "whole of ἴλαι"; similar already Curtius). - I think that he word is Pre-Greek; suffixes with V̄C are frequent there; - ιλ-ο-\/- ιλλ-ο- can represent -ily-o-.Page in Frisk: 2,386-387Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὅμῑλος

9 γῆρυς
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `voice, speech' (Il.).Etymology: Comparable forms are found in Celtic and Germanic. However, these have often a short vowel: from Germanic one cites Goth. kara f. `care, solicitude' and OE cearu f. `id.', OHG chara f. `lament(ation)'; OIr. ad-gair \< * gar-et. (But LIV 142 reconstructs *gr̥-i̯e-). Further there are forms with - rr-: Lat. garrio, with which Gr. γαρριώμεθα (q.v.; hardly with expressive gemination) is connected. For γῆρυς one assumes lengthened grade, but this is quite improbable in PIE (especially in the case of a); it is evident to reconstruct * geh₂r-. But one cites OIr. gāir f. `cry', Welsh gawr `crying, battle'. Perhaps the group must be split (in this way also LIV, for semantic reasons); a reconstruction *ǵar- is impossible, as PIE did not have an a.Page in Frisk: 1,305Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γῆρυς

16 μάρναμαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `fight, do battle' (Il.).Other forms: only present; ptc. βαρνάμενος through dissimilation.Etymology: The zerograde nasal present μάρ-να-μαι (Schwyzer 693) has an exact formal agreement in Skt. ipv. mr̥-ṇī-hí (*mr̥-nh₂-), with the thematic active mr̥ṇáti `crush' (diff. Thieme KZ 66, 233 n. 1: prop. `seize, grip, rob'; μάρναμαι originally from wrestling). If the etymology is at all correct (rejected by Pedersen IF 2, 294), μάρναμαι must originally have ment `crush one another, slay asunder'; a representant is supposed in μάρμαρος (s.v.). Semantically fits better Arm. mart `combat' (d-enlargement); the other words adduced like Germ., e.g. OWNo. meria `push away', Lat. mortārium, also morbus (W.-Hofmann s. vv., WP. 2, 278f., Pok. 735f.) learn nothing for Greek. -- An innovation beside μάρναμαι is μαραίνω, s.v.Page in Frisk: 2,177-178Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάρναμαι

Strömberg Pfl. 135; Πτολεμαῖος.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Orig. meaning `battle' (beside μάχομαι `fight'), from which (already in Homer) `continuing conflict, war' (beside μάχη `fight'); on this and on other synonyms Trümpy Fachausdr. 122 ff., Porzig Satzinhalte 78 f. On the variation of initial πτ-: π- s. Schwyzer 325 w. lit., also Trümpy 131 ff., Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 75f., Merlingen Μνήμης χάριν 2, 55 f. (cf. also on πόλις); it certainly goes back on a Pre-Greek phenomenon. -- Formally connection is recommended with πελεμίζω `shake, tremble' (Curtius 268 w. older lit.); attempt for a factual argumentation in Kretschmer Glotta 12, 54 ff. ( πόλεμος prop. `exertion, labour' from πελεμίζω `to exert oneself, take trouble[ ?]'; serious objections by Trümpy l.c.); πόλεμος orig. from throwing the lance? Both the noun to be assumed for πελεμίζω and πόλεμος contain a primary μ-suffix and go back on a verbal form cognate with πάλλω. [An idea for which I see no arguments.] -- More on the notion πόλεμος in D. Loenen Polemos. Een studie over oorlog in de griekse oudheid (MAc.Wet.Neth. N. R. 16:3; Amsterdam 1953). -- Pre-Greek origin, then, is obvious (Furnée 317).Page in Frisk: 2,574-575Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πόλεμος
